"How many pieces should a puzzle for a 3-year-old have?" is one of the most common questions parents ask. The short answer: usually 12 to 24 pieces. But every child is different, so here's the full guide.

Piece count by age

• Ages 1–2: wooden peg puzzles where each piece is a whole shape, or 2-piece matching puzzles.
• Ages 2–3: 4 to 12 large pieces, with a simple picture and clear colors.
• Age 3: 12 to 24 pieces. A child with puzzle experience can try 30.
• Age 4: 24 to 48 pieces.
• Ages 5–6: 48 to 100 pieces, and specially shaped puzzles.
• Ages 7+: 100+ pieces, 3D puzzles and brain games like tangrams.

Which puzzle suits a 3-year-old?

At 3, a 12–30 piece wooden puzzle fits best, with thick pieces that are easy to hold and a picture the child loves: animals, vehicles or a scene. A wooden puzzle lasts for years, doesn't bend or tear, and you can move on to the next one when the child is ready.

Wood or cardboard?

For toddlers and preschoolers, wood is best: thick, durable and pleasant pieces. For older kids and puzzles of hundreds of pieces, good cardboard is a great choice.

How to help kids succeed

• Start with the frame: find the corner and edge pieces first.
• Sort pieces by color before starting.
• Keep the puzzle picture in front of the child.
• Do the first few together, and praise the effort, not just finishing.
• If frustration builds, go back to an easier puzzle for a day or two. That's fine.
