Star Projector vs Night Light for Kids' Rooms: How to Choose

Lots of kids ask to "leave a little light on". A kids' night light or a star projector gives exactly that: soft, calming light without leaving the big light on. But how do you choose between them?

What's the difference?

• Night light: a small, dim light that stays on through the night. It eases fear of the dark and helps with bathroom trips or feeding a baby without waking everyone.
• Star projector: spreads stars and galaxies across the ceiling and walls. It creates a magical mood for story time and falling asleep, and space-loving kids especially enjoy it.

Some families choose both: a projector for falling asleep, and a dim light for the night.

Which light helps kids fall asleep?

Before sleep, warm and dim light is best, in orange, yellow or red tones, rather than strong white or blue light. Choose a light you can dim, and a projector with an auto-off timer so it doesn't run all night.

What else to check before buying

• Rechargeable or plug-in: a rechargeable light can move around the house and go on trips. A corded light suits a fixed spot.
• Controls: touch, button or remote. A remote is especially handy once the child is in bed.
• Material: soft silicone lights are pleasant to touch and don't break when dropped.
• Design: an astronaut, a bunny, a panda or a moon. When kids love the character, they're happy to go to bed.

A night light for a baby

In a baby's room, a dim, warm light or a crib mobile with a projector and lullabies fits well. Important: keep lights, projectors and cables out of the baby's reach and never inside the crib, and charge under supervision.

And on the ceiling

Glow-in-the-dark stars charge from daylight and glow for a few minutes after lights out, with no electricity at all. Wall stickers and moon and sun pillows complete a night-sky room.
