Gifts for 10-Year-Olds: Birthday Ideas for Big Kids

A birthday gift for a 10-year-old is one of the most common things parents search for, and no wonder: at this age kids no longer want "little kid toys", but they still love to play, build and create. The secret is to choose a real project, with a result that looks "grown-up".

What interests 10-year-olds?

At 9–12, kids can follow long instructions, work on their own for an hour or more and stick with a challenge. They love understanding how things work, making something to decorate their room, and showing friends what they built.

5 directions for a 10-year-old's gift

• Build something that works: an obstacle-avoiding robot car or a real wooden FM radio. They learn electricity and mechanics, and in the end it really works.
• Miniatures and models: a miniature room kit or micro-block models, like a capybara or a tree house. A project for a few evenings, and a lovely shelf display.
• Challenging crafts: punch needle embroidery, diamond painting or acrylic paints on canvas.
• Brain teasers: metal and wooden take-apart puzzles that challenge parents too.
• Wooden machines: a gear-driven marble run they build and then watch in action.

Tips for choosing

• Check the recommended age: build kits sometimes include tools or small parts.
• Ask the parents what the child already has, and choose a new area that could become a hobby.
• A gift that leaves a result (a model, a craft, a radio) is remembered long after the birthday.
